Internet Connections
Connections Speeds for Internet (Maximum Transmission Rates of)
1Gb = 1,000Mb = 1,000,000Kb = 1,000,000,000B 1B = 1 Character ie A
Dial Up = 56Kbps
GPRS (2.5G) = 114Kbps
EDGE (2.75G) = 236.8kbps
UMTS (3G) = 384kbps
HSDPA = 1.8Mbps
HSDPA = 3.6Mbps
HSDPA = 7.2Mbps
ADSL = 384Kbps
ADSL = 512Kbps
ADSL = 1024Kbps
ADSL = 4096Kbps
iBurst = 1024Kbps
Speed is calculated on “Download Speed” / “8” = “True Upload Speed”.
Ie 512Kbps / 8 = 64Kbps
Please Note:- All the options below require an ISP Connection
(Internet Service Provider).
Pricing for the Internet Service Providers varies between providers.
Dial Up
This requires a dedicated Telkom Telephone Line. It is extremely slow and not reliable.
+- R75-00 Excludes any Connection Time
R22-00 / Hour Peak Time or R12-00 / Hour Off Peak Time
1 Hour = 1Mb of Download ie For 1Gb = 1000Mb = 1000 Hours
Therefore 1000 Hours of Downloading @ R22-00 per Hour = R22,000-00
ADSL
This is permanent connection which is shared or dedicated via a Telkom Telephone Line.
1Gb (1000Mb) = +- R90-00
GPRS/EDGE/UMTS(3G)/HSDPA
These are Cellphone Internet Connections. The PC’s can be connected via either a Dedicated Cell Phone Modem or a Normal Cell Phone. It is one of the fastest types of connections on the market however the price is a bit more expensive than ADSL. The important factor will depend on Cell Phone Signal. The stronger the signal the better your connection type. Please note that all major cities are fully HSDPA Compliant, however you may find that smaller towns or villages etc will only have GPRS connection. GPRS is slower but still faster and more reliable than Dial Up. If you do not have cell phone signal then you will also not have internet connection.
1Gb (1000Mb) = +- R200-00 (Cell phone data bundles costs a Max of R2-00 per Mb)
iBurst
Works on Burst Technology which means that the website would fully download and then display. Not a good solution for Internet Streaming such as telephone, video, music. Reason being is that it will sound like it is stuttering. This also can be used like a Dial Up Modem for connection.
1Gb (1000Mb) = +- R250-00
As an example of how the different download speeds can affect your connection, below are some figures to give you an idea of the differences:
Average Web Page (50 Kilobytes including images)
256Kbps download speed - roughly 1.56 seconds to view page.
512Kbps download speed - roughly 0.78 seconds to view page.
1Mbps download speed - roughly 0.39 seconds to view page.
2Mbps download speed - roughly 0.195 seconds to view page.
8Mbps download speed - roughly 0.048 seconds to view page.
Average MP3 file (music file) (4 Megabytes)
256Kbps download speed - roughly 2 minutes and 8 seconds to download.
512Kbps download speed - roughly 1 minute and 4 seconds to download.
1Mbps download speed - roughly 32 seconds to download.
2Mbps download speed - roughly 16 seconds to download.
8Mbps download speed - roughly 4 seconds to download.
The figures above are theoretical as there are many other factors which determine the real download speed (such as the speed of the server/host you are downloading from).
As you can see ADSL offers incredible performance compared to standard dial-up connections and is becoming the first choice for most internet subscribers.
